Understanding Abuse & Neglect

Choose the Right Path for Care in iowa and california

Healing is possible—even when the past feels heavy.

At Holistic Resources Clinic, we recognize the deep and lasting impact that abuse and neglect can have on a person’s mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Whether the trauma occurred in early childhood or more recently, the effects are real—and so is the potential for recovery.

Abuse & Neglect

What Is Abuse and Neglect?

Abuse and neglect can take many forms, including:

  • Physical abuse – intentional harm or injury

  • Emotional abuse – verbal harm, manipulation, or rejection

  • Sexual abuse – inappropriate or non-consensual sexual behavior

  • Neglect – failure to meet basic emotional or physical needs

Children, teens, and adults who have experienced abuse or neglect may struggle with trust, anxiety, emotional regulation, relationships, or identity. These are normal responses to experiences that overwhelmed their ability to feel safe and secure.

How Trauma Shows Up in Abuse & Neglect

The effects of abuse and neglect are not always visible. Symptoms may include:

  • Flashbacks or nightmares

  • Heightened fear or hypervigilance

  • Mood swings or emotional shutdown

  • Difficulty with attachment or intimacy

  • Low self-worth or self-blame

  • Trouble concentrating or staying present

  • Physical symptoms with no clear cause

Everyone processes trauma differently, and healing takes time. But with the right support, it is absolutely possible.
