Understanding Autism
Autism isn’t a problem to solve—it’s a perspective to understand.
At Holistic Resources Clinic, we support individuals and families navigating autism with care, clarity, and clinical expertise. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts socially, and processes the world around them. But autism is also about strengths, sensitivity, and seeing the world through a unique lens.
What Is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?
Autism is called a “spectrum” because no two people with autism are exactly alike. It affects individuals differently in terms of language, sensory processing, behavior, and learning. Common areas of difference may include:
Social communication and interaction
Repetitive behaviors or routines
Sensory sensitivities (e.g., to sound, light, texture)
Focused interests or deep passions
Differences in processing emotions or transitions
Autism is not caused by trauma or parenting—it’s a neurological difference present from early development.
The Importance of Early Understanding
Autism can present differently in children, teens, and adults—and is often underdiagnosed in girls, people of color, and individuals with co-occurring conditions like ADHD or anxiety. It is under-diagnosed in those with trauma/abuse histories as well. Recognizing signs early allows for supportive strategies at home, school, and in everyday life.
Whether you’re noticing signs in your child or exploring autism for yourself as an adult, understanding is the first step toward support and self-advocacy.
