Understanding Depression

Choose the Right Path for Care in iowa and california

Depression is more than sadness—it's a shift in how the mind and body experience the world.

At Holistic Resources Clinic, we understand that depression can affect anyone—children, teens, and adults. It can disrupt sleep, motivation, energy, relationships, and even your sense of self. But with the right support, depression is treatable, and healing is absolutely possible.

Depression is more than sadness—it's a shift in how the mind and body experience the world.

What Is Depression?

Depression is a common mental health condition that goes beyond occasional sadness. It can cause a range of emotional and physical symptoms that interfere with daily life. Signs of depression may include:

  • Persistent sadness or irritability

  • Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed

  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions

  • Changes in appetite or sleep

  • Fatigue or low energy

  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or hopelessness

  • Withdrawal from friends or family

  • Thoughts of self-harm or suicide (in severe cases)

In children and teens, depression may also appear as irritability, school refusal, acting out, or physical complaints like stomachaches or headaches.

Depression & Neurodivergence

For neurodivergent individuals, depression can be especially complex. Emotional exhaustion, sensory overload, or feeling “misunderstood” can all contribute to depression in autistic or ADHD individuals. In addition, those who are experiencing an autistic burnout may misunderstand their symptoms or may be misdiagnosed with depression, as there are many overlapping symptoms. That’s why Dr. Stai takes a neurodiversity-affirming approach—recognizing the full context of each person’s experience.

How Therapy Helps In Depression

Dr. Stai provides a calm, supportive space where clients can explore their feelings and develop practical tools for relief. Treatment may include:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to shift negative thought patterns

  • Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) to strengthen relationships and emotional expression

  • Attachment-Based Therapy for children and teens

  • Parent guidance for caregivers navigating a child’s emotional needs

  • Skill-building and self-regulation strategies tailored to age and neurotype

Therapy can help individuals feel seen, understood, and empowered to make meaningful changes—one step at a time.

You Are Not Alone

Depression can make the world feel heavy. But you don’t have to carry it by yourself. Support, understanding, and hope are available—and healing is possible.
