Understanding Learning Disabilities
Struggling to learn doesn’t mean someone isn’t smart—it means they learn differently.
At Holistic Resources Clinic, we believe that learning disabilities deserve understanding, not stigma. Many children, teens, and adults with learning disabilities have average or above-average intelligence—they just process information in ways that require different strategies and support.
Learning disabilities are real, lifelong, and manageable with the right tools.
What Are Learning Disabilities?
Learning disabilities (LDs) are neurologically-based difficulties that affect how someone takes in, understands, or uses information. These challenges are not due to a lack of effort, intelligence, or motivation. Common learning disabilities include:
Dyslexia – Difficulty with reading, decoding, or spelling
Dysgraphia – Difficulty with writing, handwriting, or organizing thoughts on paper
Dyscalculia – Difficulty with math concepts, calculations, or number sense
Processing Disorders – Difficulty interpreting auditory or visual information
Children and adults with LDs may feel frustrated or misunderstood—especially when their challenges go unrecognized.
When to Consider Testing
If your child is bright but struggling in school—or if you’re an adult who’s always had difficulty with reading, math, or written expression—an evaluation can uncover the root cause and open doors to the right accommodations and strategies.
Signs may include:
Falling behind in one subject despite overall intelligence
Trouble following instructions or organizing tasks
Avoiding reading, writing, or math
Low self-confidence in school settings
Teachers or professionals expressing concern
